Artist's Statement

I am an experimental artist working with thin acrylic glazes on paper. My methods include a lot of pouring, dripping, and drizzling of paint. Along with acrylic paint, I sometimes add acrylic ink, watercolor crayons, pastels, charcoal powder, or watercolor. I work intuitively, allowing the painting to evolve until it "speaks" to me. I love the tactile qualities of paint and color, and I like to incorporate texture using all kinds of tools - even some from the hardware store.

Nature holds a great deal of attraction for me and I generally paint with one eye on nature. I have traveled extensively and that has had a lot of influence on my work; my reactions to a new location eventually are reflected in my paintings. For a large part of the past fifteen years, I have lived on a sailboat with my husband, crusing along the coast from Maine to Texas as well as in the Bahamas. Because the bulk of that time was spent in south Florida, the sub-tropical influence is definitely evident. I have painted on the boat and the dock as well as in the studio.

Although I have taken an occasional workshop from well-known artists, I consider myself to be self-taught. I have been painting since 1973 and have worked in oil, pastel, charcoal, watercolor, collage, and now acrylic and ink. My work is held in private and corporate collections in the US, England, and Taiwan.

The power of abstract art resides in the relationship between the viewer and the viewed. For me, experimental painting is an exciting leap into the unknown. When I connect with solid ground via a successful painting, it is so exhilarating. If I can draw the viewer into the painting and make a connection, then I have accomplished my goal.
